Sony’s Controversial Changes to PlayStation Stars Hits Program Starting Today

Sony is making a few changes to its PlayStation Stars rewards program. One change in particular is being rolled out today with members having to accept the new terms.
Starting October 24th, new points accrued through PlayStation Stars must be used within 12 months from when they appear in your PlayStation Stars account balance. According to emails being sent to PlayStation Stars members, “Points earned prior to October 24, 2024, will continue to expire at the end of the month plus 24 months from the date on which they appear in your PlayStation Stars account balance.”
On top of this, on March 1st, 2025, PlayStation Stars will begin to exclude the ability to earn points from subscription payments. “The definition of “Eligible Purchases” will be updated to exclude all subscription payments made on PlayStation Store,” Sony’s email reads. This means that members will no longer be able to nab extra PlayStation Stars points for their initial or ongoing PlayStation Plus subscriptions or any other service.
News of this first began to surface earlier this year, after PlayStation Stars was taken offline for nearly a month. Two years after the initial rollout in 2022, these announced changes were met with some conflicting reactions from players.
PlayStation Stars has often been a way for players to earn points by playing specific titles, subscribing to PlayStation’s services, purchasing games, and engaging in monthly campaigns. It was an easy way to be rewarded simply by being in the PlayStation ecosystem. These points could then be used for store credit rewards. Players could also unlock small avatar collectibles to display within the app.
Alongside the recent changes, players are now noticing that PlayStation Stars is reducing the store credit options within the app. From user reports on X (formally Twitter), the $5 and $25 options have been removed in Canada. Now, a $15 option remains, costing 3,750 points.
With the new changes implemented, PlayStation Stars members must log into the program on PlayStation App or online and accept the new Terms of Service. If members don’t take this action, Sony will cancel the membership.

This is what happens when a company starts to get a monopoly on a market…. well done to all the idiots that actively encourage the demise of Xbox.
The demise of Xbox was self inflicted. The moment they released a half powered sku xbox series S was the moment xbox was done. They mostly throwing in the towel now and going for cloud gaming and game pass subscriptions.
