Microsoft’s Cloud and AI Strategies Under Fire in FTC Investigation

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has intensified its antitrust investigation into Microsoft, focusing on the company’s cloud computing, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence businesses (via Bloomberg).

The investigation centers on Microsoft’s practices in bundling popular software such as Office productivity tools and Teams with its Azure cloud services.

Critics, including rival companies like Slack and Zoom, argue that these tactics undermine competition by locking customers into the Microsoft ecosystem and making it harder for competitors to gain traction.

Additionally, the FTC is examining Microsoft’s cybersecurity offerings, including the integration of products like Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory), which competitors claim stifles innovation by tying services to the company’s cloud platform.

The investigation has gained momentum after a series of high-profile cybersecurity incidents involving Microsoft’s products, further spotlighting its significant role as a top government contractor in the U.S.

The FTC’s push aligns with broader regulatory efforts to address market consolidation in tech industries. Chair Lina Khan, who has spearheaded aggressive antitrust enforcement during her tenure, views this investigation as part of a larger effort to curb monopolistic behaviors in emerging technologies.

Microsoft has yet to comment on the investigation, but industry experts speculate that the probe could lead to stricter regulations on bundling practices or potential structural changes in its business operations.

The FTC’s investigation comes as global regulators, including the European Union, also ramp up scrutiny of major tech companies, signaling a shift toward more stringent oversight of the industry.
