Apple Reportedly in Talks to Partner With Tencent and ByteDance over AI in China

Apple is reportedly in discussions with China tech giants Tencent and ByteDance, regarding negotiations for a potential partnership. The Cupertino company is seeking to work with the two aforementioned companies to help bring its AI innovations and strategy to the Chinese market.
Upon the launch of iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2, Apple began integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its devices across the globe. However, it includes the exception of China, due to regulatory restrictions. Thus, Apple is seeking to work with Tencent and ByteDance to help gain approval. In China, the law requires tech companies to gain government approval prior to releasing generative AI services to the public.
Tencent and ByteDance both have their own respective AI models, Doubao and Hunyuan. As reported by Reuters, Apple is in negotiations to potentially integrate these AI models into iPhones sold in China. These discussions are still said to be early days so nothing is officially set in motion. Alongside Tencent and ByteDance, Apple has also reportedly approached Baidu about similar AI-related dealings.
If Apple were to secure a partnership with an already approved company supporting AI modules, it could leverage the generative AI capabilities to help power Apple Intelligence across the Chinese market. Currently, Apple is beginning to lose a bit of its competitive edge within China. For instance, in 2023, the company dropped from the top five smartphone makers during the second quarter. Apple did bounce back in the following quarter. However, sales are still on a decline year-over-year by 0.3 percent.
Earlier this month, iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 were released, marking the true launch of Apple Intelligence. While still very early, the onboard AI systems introduce Image Playground, which lets users create Genmojis.
On iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, the Camera Control uses AI to provide contextual information about the surroundings. ChatGPT is also leveraged for Siri and Writing Tools. Apple Intelligence supports localized English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. In April 2025, more languages like Chinese, French, German, and Spanish will arrive.
