Telus Brings Private 5G to Calgary Airport—No More Spotty Wi-Fi

Calgary International Airport (YYC) is set to become the first airport in Canada to have a private 5G network, thanks to a 10-year deal with Telus. The high-speed wireless system will cover the entire airport, improving connectivity for passengers, employees, and operations.
The project is expected to roll out in phases, with the first operational launch set for May 1, 2025.
Unlike public Wi-Fi, a private 5G network offers faster speeds and lower latency, meaning fewer dead zones and stronger, uninterrupted coverage throughout the airport.
“At YYC, we’re focused on the future of travel,” says Megan Gupton, Chief Information Officer at YYC Calgary Airport Authority. “Fixed connections and Wi-Fi alone won’t be enough. The latest generation of private 5G networks are necessary to unlock greater productivity, resilience, and sustainability.”
“By implementing the country’s first airport-wide private wireless network, we’re not just enhancing current operations – we’re creating a platform for continuous innovation that will elevate the travel experience and operational efficiency for years to come,” said Navin Arora, Executive Vice-president, Telus and President, Telus Business Solutions, in a statement to iPhone in Canada.
The first phase of the rollout will begin on May 1, 2025, with more upgrades expected over time. Officials say the network could eventually support new technology like automated check-ins, real-time security updates, and AI-powered airport logistics.
