PlayStation 5 Surpasses 75 Million Units Sold, According to Latest Earnings Report

Sony has just reported the biggest quarter for the PlayStation 5, per the latest quarterly earnings. Between October and December 2024, Sony had sold 9.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles, exceeding 75 million lifetime units.

According to the Q4 earnings call, Sony reports that the company’s gaming business has grown by 38 percent when compared to the same quarter the year prior. Sony also reports that PlayStation Network’s monthly active users have increased from 118 million in FY23 Q3 to 129 million in FY24 Q3. PlayStation Plus’ revenue increased by 20 percent year-on-year, which Sony claims is due to a shift toward higher-priced tiers.

Aside from achievements across the gaming and network services segment, the software also saw a substantial boon during the recent quarterly results. Sony reports that PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 saw software sales reach 95.9 million units sold. With this, the company garnered a 6.2 million unit increase from the 89.7 million from the year prior. Sony notes that 11.6 million units of first-party titles were sold. This, however, is a decrease from the 12.3 million from last year. 74 percent of full-game units were digital downloads, which is also down from the 77 percent reported last year.

This is the first quarterly report since the launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro. Unfortunately, Sony did not provide separate sales numbers for its premium-priced console. Another interesting note to consider is that the company reports that 42 percent of PlayStation 5 console sales during its latest quarter were purchased by new users.

As of the latest quarter, PlayStation 5’s console sales are now 1.5 million units shy of outselling the PlayStation 4 during the same period. However, Sony believes it may close the gap with the likes of first-party games releasing in 2025 like Ghost of Yotei alongside larger marquee releases such as Monster Hunter Wilds, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and GTA VI. Sony claims to have “high expectations” for games releasing during the next fiscal year, which begins April 1.
