Google has launched a free version of Gemini Code Assist, an AI-powered coding assistant designed to help developers with code completion, debugging, and reviews. This is all being powered by the company’s Gemini 2.0 model.

Previously available only to businesses, the tool is now open to individuals, including students, freelancers, and hobbyists. Gemini Code Assist supports all public programming languages and integrates with Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Firebase, and Android Studio. It also provides AI-powered code reviews on GitHub, helping developers catch bugs and improve their code more efficiently.

Unlike other free AI coding tools that limit usage, Google is offering up to 180,000 code completions per month (whereas other free solutions are at about 2,000/month), making it one of the most generous options available, explained Ryan J. Salva, Senior Director, Product Management, on Tuesday. There’s also a large token context window with up to 128,000 input token support in chat.

The assistant is optimized for coding tasks, allowing users to generate, explain, and refine code with natural language prompts. Developers can also customize AI feedback in GitHub by defining their own style guides. If you’re a student looking to improve your code, this is a great new addition to help you fix bugs and more–all for free.

Google says this is a public preview, and feedback will help improve the tool. To use Gemini Code Assist, individuals only need a personal Gmail account, with no credit card required. Next, you just need to install Gemini Code Assist in Visual Studio Code, GitHub or JetBrains IDEs.
