1Password Introduces Innovative New Location-Aware Feature
Password management app 1Password has unveiled an innovative new feature designed to enhance user convenience and security: the ability to associate specific items with physical locations.

The new feature enables users to link any item stored within 1Password to a designated physical location. When a user approaches or arrives at this location, the associated item automatically appears in the “Nearby” section of the app’s home tab.
This functionality is particularly beneficial for accessing information such as Wi-Fi passwords at a favorite café, alarm codes at the office, or medical records at a doctor’s clinic, ensuring that essential data is readily available in context.
To utilize this feature, users can add a location to both new and existing items within their 1Password vaults. This can be accomplished either while at the specific location or remotely by dropping a pin using the app’s integrated map view. Additionally, users have the flexibility to define the proximity range for the “Nearby” items list, with options ranging from 50 feet to up to 10 miles.
Understanding the sensitivity of location data, 1Password has implemented robust privacy protections. The app performs checks for relevant items locally on the user’s device, ensuring that current location coordinates are neither stored nor transmitted externally.
This location-based functionality originated from an internal hackathon at 1Password, aiming to facilitate faster access to items based on physical context. Following positive feedback during experimental testing in 1Password Labs, the feature was refined and officially integrated into the app.

In addition to location-based item association, 1Password also offers a “Travel Mode” feature, enhancing data security during travel. This mode allows users to temporarily remove sensitive vaults from their devices, retaining only those marked as safe for travel.
If subjected to device inspections by authorities, users can ensure that only non-sensitive information is accessible. Once the journey concludes, deactivating Travel Mode restores the removed vaults.
If you’re already using 1Password, you can try out this new feature today to securely link your items to the places you need them most.
