Sonos Cancels Streaming Video Player, Codenamed Pinewood

Sonos has reported cancelled plans to release a streaming video player. The abrupt cancellation of the hardware is said to have occurred during a recent hands-on meeting within the company.
Word comes by way of The Verge, which reports the video player was being developed under the codename ‘Pinewood’. This streaming video player is said to have been a major hardware launch for the company. Pinewood is claimed to have been well into its development cycle, even entering a beta-testing phase.
It’s reported that the team working on Pinewood will be shuffled around to work on other projects. Interim CEO Tom Conrad is reprioritizing the company’s roadmap following a tumultuous 2024. Conrad has reportedly stated that Sonos’ moves within the video space are on hold “for now.”
While many of the details about Pinewood are still under wraps, it’s said some employees were worried about the company’s push into video. Following the launch of the Sonos Ace headphones and the fallout of the refreshed app, it’s claimed there have been concerns about the company breaching into a new product category.
With the cancellation of Pinewood now setting in, Sonos may be without a product launch in the mid-to-late half of 2025. Rounding out 2024, Sonos launched the Arc Ultra soundbar and Sub 4. It’s still unknown what the year will have in store for the company. However, given the fact that Pinewood is now shelved, it’s unlikely that the company will push for another product to launch instead.
However, there is good news. Sonos is said to be continuing work to improve and fix its mobile app. Over 2024, the company went through great measures to restore basic functions and optimize the refreshed app. This includes continued work with The Trade Desk, the company handling Sonos’ OS. Speaking to The Verge, Sonos spokesperson Erin Pategas said, “We don’t comment on our roadmap, but as has been previously announced we have a long-standing relationship with The Trade Desk and that relationship continues.”
