PlayStation to Increase PS5 Price in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand

Sony has announced a price increase is hitting its PlayStation 5 in select global markets. As a result of global economic uncertainty, prices for the hardware have increased in the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand by roughly 10 percent.
In a PlayStation Blog post published this weekend, the company states Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has “made the tough decision to raise the recommended retail price (RRP) of the PlayStation 5 console in select markets.” The post also goes on to claim that “high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates” have been factors in this decision. Effective April 14th, prices for PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and Standard PlayStation 5 units are increasing in Europe, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
The price of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will be increasing across the board. However, the standard version of the PlayStation 5 will only be increasing in Australia and New Zealand. Sony goes on to clarify that prices for the PlayStation 5 Pro will remain as is in each of these markets. The company is also cutting the price of the disc drive add-on for its Digital Edition console.
Here is the price breakdown for each market, listed by Sony.

The majority of PlayStation 5 consoles are manufactured in China, which is now being subjected to 145 percent tariffs on imports by the US. While it’s said that game consoles and other pieces of tech are exempt from the tariffs, Sony is adjusting prices due to the ongoing uncertainty. Price increases in Europe and other markets are likely the company’s way of deflating the need to increase prices in the US, which is a core market for console sales. Currently, Sony is not increasing the prices of consoles in Canada.
It’s worth noting that this is the second time PlayStation 5 console prices have increased in many of these markets. In mid-2022, Sony adjusted the prices of its consoles due to “high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends.” At the time, the company increased Canadian prices of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition to $519.99 while the standard edition rose to $649.99.
