Apple’s Big Shift: All U.S. iPhones to Be Made in India, Says Report
Apple is preparing to assemble every iPhone sold in the U.S. in India as early as next year, according to people familiar with the company’s strategy, reports the Financial Times.
The move would significantly expand Apple’s manufacturing presence in India and mark a major pivot away from China, where the majority of iPhones are currently made.
This acceleration in supply chain diversification follows pressure from huge U.S. tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump, which have targeted Chinese imports. While Trump has since shown signs of softening his stance, the damage to companies like Apple was significant—tariffs once wiped $700 billion US off its market value.
Apple’s goal is to produce all 60 million plus iPhones sold annually in the U.S. out of India by the end of 2026. That would require a doubling of India’s current iPhone output. Most iPhones are still made in China through suppliers like Foxconn, but Apple has been gradually shifting work to Indian partners including Tata Electronics.
The final assembly of iPhones — the step being moved to India — is only part of a larger production puzzle. Apple remains reliant on Chinese suppliers for many components. In recent months, Foxconn and Tata began importing pre-assembled parts from China to support Indian production.
Apple is set to release its quarterly earnings next week and is expected to launch its iPhone 17 series this fall. It will be interesting to see if any future iPhones coming to Canada will say ‘Made in India’ or not.
