Google to Cut Off Old Nest Thermostats—Here’s What to Know
Google has announced that it will end support for its first and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats later this year.
Starting October 25, 2025, these early Nest models—originally launched in 2011 and 2012—will no longer receive software or security updates. That’s according to an email sent out by the Google Home team and shared by iPhone in Canada reader JG.
Owners will still be able to adjust temperature, mode, schedules, and settings directly on the thermostat itself. However, app controls through the Nest or Google Home apps will stop working, and connected features like Home/Away Assist will no longer be available, which really is too bad.
Google is offering eligible users a discount to “help with this transition” on the latest 4th-generation Nest Learning Thermostat.
It says customers can buy the updated model for a special price of $219.99 CAD, down from the regular price of $379.99 CAD, by redeeming a special offer through the Google Store (you need to click the link in the email to see the one-time use code). The promo runs until November 21, 2025, offering $160 off. But if you have multiple Nest Thermotstats to replace? That’s going to add up.
Only users who had an active first or second-gen Nest Learning Thermostat in the past 28 days are eligible for the upgrade offer, and restrictions apply, says Google.
Do you still have 1st and 2nd gen Nest Learning Thermostats at home? What are you going to do now?

My parents had a 2nd Gen thermostat. I had a 3rd Gen at my house that I recently swapped out for a Honeywell thermostat (with HomeKit compatibility). I gave them my old 3rd Gen and saved them $219. Now we wait until Google eventually cuts off the 3rd Gen. LOL
Lol!
That's why you don't buy a NEST.
google never sticks to their products long term for some weird reason
