Microsoft Extends Support for Office App on Windows 10 to 2028

Microsoft will be extending its support of Office apps on Windows 10 until 2028, long past the original cutoff date. The company announces that the October 14 support cutoff will no longer be in effect.

As announced in a support page. Microsoft states it’ll be offering additional security updates for Office apps on Windows 10 through until 2028. “To help maintain security while you transition to Windows 11, Microsoft will continue providing security updates for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 for three years after Windows 10 reaches end of support,” the page reads. “These updates will be delivered through the standard update channels, ending on October 10, 2028.”

Previously, Microsoft announced its plans to wind down on Office app support across Windows 10 devices this year. Upon the original October 14 deadline, Office apps including Word and Excel would continue to function. However, these apps may be met with performance and reliability issues if continued to be used. Microsoft suggests organizations using Microsoft 365 apps on devices running Windows 10 “should move to Windows 11.”

While Microsoft will continue to support Office apps on Windows 10, the language from the company suggests that it’ll only support its apps with new security updates. Unfortunately, this means that those holding out from upgrading to Windows 11 will not recieve any new features to the Windows 10 apps. However, this may not always be the case as Microsoft hasn’t shared specifics.

Since the advent of Windows 11, Microsoft has been trying to get users to ditch Windows 11 and upgrade to the new software. Earlier this year, the announmcement that Office apps would no longer be supported was another push for consumers and businesses to adopt Windows 11. However, it appears as though the company may be having a change in heart from its aggressive sway. Though, this does sound like only a temporary stall in the grand scheme of things.
