Public Mobile Plans Just Got a Huge Long Distance Boost

Telus-owned Public Mobile continues to tweak its plans, this time adding more long distance minutes to its 5G plans.

Public Mobile made the changes on Thursday to select 5G plans, but its 4G plans remain unchanged. Check out what’s new below…

4G Plans (no changes)

5G Canada-US-Mexico

As you can see, plans priced $35/month and above saw double the minutes, while the $30 plan now has 250 minutes, up from 100.

The international minutes offer free calling from Canada to numbers in China, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.

Now, it seems we’re going full circle here as back in November we saw 2,000 international minutes at the tail end of Cyber Monday, which were then cut in half after the promo period ended.

These international minutes promos can appeal to newcomers to Canada that seek free calling to numbers back home. Recent cuts on immigration levels have affected wireless carrier revenues, subscribers and profits.

Who actually uses or cares about long distance minutes these days? You can have a much higher fidelity call over an app for an unlimited length, for free, and even add video to the mix. I just don't get how anyone that isn't 70 (or 80 for that matter) gets excited about long distance minutes.

I would just use WhatsApp or any IM app.

Totally agree, but it does come in handy for when needing to reach a landline, like when needing to call a government office back home, or a bank. WhatsApp isn’t gonna be much help in those kinda scenarios

I reach landlines overseas all the time through apps and much cheaper than this…

Exactly,I'd rather have more mobile data in place of those useless and expensive minutes when I can get em much cheaper through apps…

Would be nice to give those who don't dont need those minutes the option to exchange them for more mobile data or cut a few dollars off the plans…
