Apples F1 Walks Away With $55.6 Million at Domestic Opening Weekend

Apple has its first bonifide theatrical hit following the most recent weekend. Starring Brad Pitt, F1 earned $55.6 million USD (around $76 million CAD) at the domestic box office during its opening weekend.

According to a recent report from VarietyF1 has opened at the box office, meeting projections of between $50 million to $60 million. Looking at the international box office, F1 managed to race away with $88.4 million across 78 markets.

F1 stars Pitt as a former racer returning to the circuit after 30 years. In a bid to save his former teammate’s team, APXGP. The film also stars Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Javier Bardem. Additionally, F1 features real teams and racers, including Lewis Hamilton. The film was directed by Joseph Kosinski. Jerry Bruckheimer serves as producer on the film.

In a statement, Apple’s head of worldwide video, Jamie Erlicht, said, “This success is a testament to the vision of Joe, Jerry, Brad, and Lewis, along with the efforts of the entire cast and crew. Together with Formula 1, they’ve created an inspiring cinematic journey that captures the energy and spirit of the sport.”

F1 is being published by Warner Bros. since Apple doesn’t currently have its own means of publishing its theatrical films. However, even with pairing up with Warner Bros., F1 is the first commercial success for Apple’s theatrical ambitions. This places F1 as a more successful theatrical project than movies such as Napoleon, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Argylle. For context, F1′s theatrical run thus far, generating $144 million globally, exceeds the entire run of Killers of the Flower Moon. The film is also well on its way to topping Napoleon‘s $221 million. The film is said to have a budget of between $200 to $300 million.
