Google Promises Major Home Overhaul Amid User Complaints

Google has officially responded to growing user frustration over the performance of its Assistant on Home and Nest devices, acknowledging the recent decline in reliability and functionality (via 9to5Google).

The company’s head of product for Google Home and Nest, Anish Kattukaran offered a public apology in a post on X and revealed that significant improvements are planned for release later this year.

Many households have reported repeated failures when issuing basic commands to Google Assistant, with frequent error messages and erratic behavior becoming the norm. Commands that once worked flawlessly are now regularly met with vague error messages or incorrect actions.

Some users say lights won’t turn off as scheduled, fans activate at the wrong time, and the assistant sometimes delivers weather updates for entirely different locations within the same home. The issue appears widespread, affecting both older and newer Nest speakers and hubs, and has raised concerns about the stability of Google’s entire smart home ecosystem.

This decline has coincided with Google’s deeper integration of its Gemini AI framework, though the company has not directly linked the problems to those changes.

This timeline strongly suggests the improvements could be tied to Google’s upcoming hardware and software announcements, particularly around the Pixel 10 lineup expected to debut later this summer. Google traditionally uses the launch of new Pixel devices to roll out major system-level enhancements, including updates to the Google Assistant and broader integrations across its ecosystem.

With Gemini taking on a larger role, it is likely the Assistant will also see a deeper infusion of generative AI features aimed at making responses more accurate and contextual.

Until then, users are left grappling with devices that often fail to perform the core tasks they were purchased for. Although rebooting or resetting devices has helped in some cases, there is no consistent solution for the broader issues currently plaguing users.
