Apple is Testing Studio Display 2 with mini LED ProMotion
Apple is developing Studio Display 2 with mini LED ProMotion and A19 Pro chip for sharper contrast and smoother motion, possibly set for an early 2026 release, as discovered by MacRumors in newly leaked Apple code.

According to Apple’s internal code, the new display carries the internal identifier J427 and appears to be in active testing right now.
Hints of the project have been surfacing in multiple reports. Display industry analyst Ross Young of Counterpoint Research forecasted a refreshed Studio Display with mini LED lighting arriving in late 2025 or early 2026. Mini LED promises a leap in visual performance by enabling localized dimming greater contrast and richer color compared to the current LED backlit 5K display.
Additional analysis has tipped potential adoption of ProMotion technology. This would raise the refresh rate beyond the current standard 60 hertz delivering smoother scrolling and motion. Speculation is also building that Apple may include its latest A19 Pro chip in the successor display.
Rreports also suggest that the new display may arrive alongside upcoming Macs powered by M5 chips in early 2026. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman noted Apple plans to introduce an updated external display in the first part of 2026 possibly consolidating its broader hardware release strategy.
While this iteration appears to build on the existing Studio Display identity, there are signs that Apple could be considering alternate naming. The discovery of a second internal codename J527 offers a hint that multiple variants are being explored.

The current Studio Display launched in 2022 alongside the Mac Studio. It features a 27 inch Retina 5K panel powered by an A13 Bionic chip along with a Center Stage camera six speaker system and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. Despite high praise for its design and integration its screen has lagged in features like local dimming and variable refresh rate.
As Apple continues refining the project internally retail release could come as soon as spring 2026, aligned with its refreshed Mac lineup.
