Meta Halts AI Hiring After Major Recruitment Surge
Meta has halted all recruitment in its AI group following an aggressive hiring blitz, that saw the addition of more than 50 researchers and engineers in recent months (via The Wall Street Journal).

The hiring stoppage, which began last week, includes a freeze on internal employee transfers across AI teams, marking a sweeping reorganization of the division. Anyone hoping to bring in external talent now must get approval from Meta’s Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang.
Meta framed the decision as part of standard planning, saying it was laying down organizational structure for the new Superintelligence Labs and preparing for annual budgeting.
The restructuring builds on Meta’s rebranding of its AI operations under the umbrella of Superintelligence Labs. This new division consists of four key groups i.e. a superintelligence team known as TBD Lab, an AI products group, an infrastructure operations team, and a longer-term research arm, Reinvented as Fundamental AI Research.
The hiring freeze comes after Meta’s highly publicized AI recruitment spree, where CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally courted talent from top institutions like OpenAI and DeepMind, offering compensation packages in the nine-figure range. One such recruitment attempt reportedly included a staggering $1.5 billion package.
While these investments contributed to Meta’s stock rising roughly 28% earlier this year, concerns from shareholders about spiraling compensation costs began to emerge. Analysts warned that escalating stock-based pay packages could erode future shareholder returns and fail to produce clear innovation gains.

An MIT study shows that as many as 95% of companies have yet to see meaningful returns on their generative AI investments, raising questions about whether excessive hiring upfront translates into effective outcomes.
