Google Translate Gets Gemini-Powered Live Conversation

Google has today announced two new AI-powered features within its Translate app, that promise to transform real time communication and conversation practice.

Google Translate.

Powered by Gemini AI, the app now supports live translation for spoken conversations in over 70 languages, and a new practice mode for tailored listening and speaking sessions based on each user’s fluency and goals.

The live conversation feature invites users to tap into a natural dialogue experience. Once you open the app and select live translate simply start speaking and the app will recognize when to translate. You will hear the translation aloud and see a live transcript in both languages right on your screen.

Gemini AI can recognize pauses and accents, and distinguish your voice from surrounding noise such as airport chatter or a crowded cafe. This smart listening allows users to converse fluidly without extra taps or pauses. For now this capability is available in the United States India and Mexico with support for languages like Arabic Hindi Korean Spanish Tamil and French.

To complement this communicative power, Google has also launched a practice mode built for conversation skills. Rather than relying on rigid lesson formats this mode asks users to share their skill level plus their reason for learning such as everyday chat or preparing for a visit.

From there, Gemini generates custom scenarios you can either listen to and tap known words appearing on screen or practice speaking with hints when you need them. These sessions adapt as you progress encouraging growth through practice shaped by your interests.

The beta experience is rolling out this week via mobile app on Android and iOS for English speakers practicing Spanish or French plus Spanish French and Portuguese speakers practicing English.
