Surprise: Apple Extends Free iPhone Satellite Features in Canada

Apple is giving iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 series users another free year of SOS satellite services. The company confirmed this in its press releases tied to its iPhone 17 launch that the free trial has been extended once again.

The extension applies to anyone who activated their iPhone 14 or 15 series in a country that supports satellite features before September 9, 2025, which includes Canada.

First introduced with iPhone 14 series in 2022, Apple’s satellite features let users connect to satellites when they’re off the grid without Wi-Fi or cellular. From there, they can text emergency services, request roadside help, share their location, or send messages to friends and family. In November 2023, Apple extended the free service for another year. Last September, an extended satellite feature let users send messages to anyone over remote connectivity in Canada.

We’ve already read about countless stories how this satellite feature has saved lives of those in the backcountry throughout Canada.

While connection speeds can be slow — messages may take 30 seconds in ideal conditions or longer if trees or buildings are in the way — the service can be a lifeline when you’re stuck with no coverage. Apple relies on Globalstar’s satellite network for these features.

Normally, satellite features are included free for two years after activating an iPhone 14 or later, but Apple has now extended that window multiple times.

Alternatives to Apple’s satellite SOS feature? Rogers is offering its satellite beta right now for free, which offers texting in areas without cell coverage and is powered by SpaceX’s Starlink.
