Chrome Now Automatically Silences Annoying Website Notifications

Chrome notifications.

Google is rolling out a new Chrome feature aimed at reducing those constant pop-up notifications that clutter your screen. The browser will now automatically remove notification permissions from websites you haven’t interacted with recently, helping users “cut through the noise” for a calmer browsing experience.

According to Chrome’s internal data, fewer than 1% of notifications get any user interaction, yet many sites continue to send frequent alerts. The new system will target only websites with low engagement but high notification volume, while leaving trusted or frequently used sites alone, according to Archit Agarwal, Product Manager, Chrome, on Friday.

Users will be notified whenever Chrome revokes permissions and can easily re-enable them through Safety Check or by revisiting the site. The feature, coming to Android and desktop, won’t affect installed web apps. This is a welcome feature to get ride of unnecessary notifications without users needing to do anything.

Google says early tests show a major drop in notification clutter without reducing important alerts — and some websites even saw higher engagement after sending fewer notifications. Google says this is part of its ongoing effort to improve safety, privacy, and focus in Chrome.
