Pro Max Camera Test: iPhone 15 vs. iPhone 16 vs. iPhone 17 [VIDEO]

In a recent blind camera test, the folks over Max Tech have compared the iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Pro Max to find out how far Apple has really come with its flagship camera system.

15 vs 16 vs 17 Pro Max BLIND Camera Test.

The test pits the iPhone 17 Pro Max against its predecessors, the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro Max, across a variety of real-world scenes. These include bright daylight landscapes, indoor shots, portraits, low-light environments, and night photography.

In daylight scenes, differences among the three phones are subtle at first glance. All models produce balanced exposures and pleasing colors, but when zoomed in, the iPhone 17 Pro Max consistently pulls ahead. Its images show sharper detail in textures such as grass, fabric, and fine edges, suggesting Apple’s new image pipeline and sensor tuning are capturing more true-to-life resolution.

The biggest leap comes in low-light and night photography. Here, the iPhone 17 Pro Max clearly separates itself from both the 15 and 16. It delivers cleaner shadows, reduced grain, and a much smoother tonal range in dim settings. Color fidelity holds up better too, as scenes that appear yellowish or overly bright on older models look richer and more balanced on the 17.

Max Tech also examined zoom and telephoto performance, an area Apple emphasized in this year’s upgrade. The iPhone 17 Pro Max shows more detail at higher magnifications, with fewer digital artifacts and a steadier tonal balance. In portraits and selfies, the differences are smaller but still noticeable.

By the end of the blind test, viewers and reviewers agreed that the iPhone 17 Pro Max offered the most consistently impressive results. While the 16 Pro Max remains a capable performer, its advantage over the 15 is modest, and both fall short of the refinement and stability of the new model.

For most users, the jump from the 16 to the 17 is noticeable mainly in challenging lighting and zoom performance, but for anyone upgrading from the 15 or earlier, the improvements are much more significant.
