Apple Reportedly Cancels iPhone Air 2 After Weak Sales

Apple will not release the next version of the iPhone Air in fall 2026 as originally planned, according to a report from The Information.

The iPhone Air, introduced in September, was designed as a thinner and lighter model within Apple’s flagship lineup. The slimmer build came with smaller battery capacity and fewer camera features (just one camera in 2025) compared to other iPhone models.

Apple was initially slated to debut the iPhone Air 2 in an update in fall 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 series. However, Apple has reportedly scrapped that timeline entirely, with no new release date set, says sources. The delay stems from production cuts: supplier Foxconn plans to halt iPhone Air assembly by the end of November 2025, while Luxshare already stopped in late October. This has led internal Apple managers to inform engineering teams that the project is off the schedule.

Sources cited in the report said demand for the iPhone Air has been lower than expected. In October, Apple announced plans to open pre-orders for the model in China after receiving approval for eSIM services. The phone is sold there without a physical SIM tray, supporting eSIM only.

The report seemingly corroborates a rumour from last month that said the iPhone Air was reaching the end of the line production cuts.

The iPhone Air starts from a hefty $1,449 in Canada. The design is super thin, but nobody asked for a thin phone with just a single camera in 2025. It appears the iPhone Air might be suffering the same fate as the short-lived iPhone 5c.

I believe it was Jobs that intimated 'some people don't know what they want until it's presented to them.' It has worked for them in the past. So I don't fault Apple for creating a product they thought would broaden their marketshare. It just didn't work out the AIR.
