Waterfield Designs: Shinjuku Tech Organizer and Air Caddy Hands-On Review

WaterField Designs is a San Francisco–based company that handcrafts premium bags, cases, and tech accessories made from materials like full-grain leather, ballistic nylon, and waxed canvas. Founded in 1998, it’s known for its thoughtful, durable designs and small-batch production that blends function with craftsmanship.
We’ve previously reviewed their Maxwell Sleeve and CitySlicker MacBook Air case, and both are still holding up today. It’s definitely some well-made, quality gear that has stood the test of time (I’ve received a lot of compliments for the CitySlicker case over the years).
Recently, WaterField Designs sent us their new Shinjuku Tech Organizer and Air Caddy to check out. We’ll be putting both through their paces soon on a trip, but here’s our quick initial hands-on review with these cases.
WaterField Designs – Shinjuku Tech Organizer
The Shinjuku Tech Organizer feels like something every frequent traveller or gadget lover should have. The ballistic nylon with black leather trim is a nice looking combo. Besides that, the outer shell feels rugged and weather-resistant, while the smooth leather accents give it that premium touch.

Inside, there’s a lot of thought put into the layout. You get four softly-lined pockets for bulkier items like a mouse, power brick, or AirPods, plus smaller slots for cables and dongles. The main compartment has soft padding all around, protecting whatever you throw in there. The front zippered pocket is perfect for items you need to grab quickly, like earbuds or a charging cable at airport security.

Even though the compact model looks small, it can pack a surprising amount—chargers, USB-C hubs, portable SSDs, and even a compact power bank all fit comfortably. This was clearly built with room for expansion. The gold interior lining is a smart touch too, making it easier to see what’s inside without having to dig around in dim light.

The water-repellent zippers help keep your gear safe from light rain or spills, and the case itself keeps its shape nicely even when packed full. It’s also lightweight enough to toss into your backpack or carry-on without adding bulk.
The large version can fit an iPad mini in the main compartment, making it a solid option if you carry a small tablet or e-reader. We have here the $89 USD compact size. Both sizes come in either waxed canvas or ballistic nylon, depending on whether you prefer a more rugged or modern finish.

The Shinjuku Tech Organizer is part of a larger Shinjuku Collection, inspired by Tokyo’s fast-paced lifestyle—compact, durable, and designed for people who are always on the move.
It’s nice to be able to store all your tech essentials in one place (and upgrade from your flimsy Ziplock bag).
WaterField Designs – Air Caddy
The Air Caddy ($69 USD) is a clever little travel companion designed to keep all your in-flight essentials in one spot. I’ll be testing it on a future trip, but after a few days of using it at home, it’s already clear how handy it’ll be once I’m on a plane. The version I have below is the 11-inch size.

It’s always nice to have a small bag that sits on your lap or in the seat back pocket so you know exactly where everything is — your iPad, phone, AirPods, snacks, and chargers. This one fits my iPad perfectly, and my AirPods Max also fit inside the 11-inch model, though it can’t zip all the way up when they’re in. Still, it’s nice having everything organized in one place, freeing up space under the seat in front of me.
The Air Caddy comes in ballistic nylon, waxed canvas, or X-Pac textile, all with a premium oil-tanned leather trim. Inside, there’s a bright gold liner that makes it easy to spot small items in dim airplane lighting. The main compartment is padded to protect your tablet, while several smaller pockets hold accessories like cables, pens, or a phone.

The zipper opens three-quarters of the way around, making it easy to reach things quickly, and it’s designed to slide neatly into a plane’s seat-back pocket.

I’m planning to bring the Air Caddy on my next trip, and it already feels like it’ll make packing and midflight organization much simpler. It’s a smart, compact way to keep all your tech essentials right where you need them—no more rummaging under the seat or in your backpack mid-flight and scrambling in a panic upon landing to round up all your gear. Stay tuned for more, folks!
