LEGO Reinvents the Brick With Built-In Tech Starting With Star Wars

LEGO has revealed a new interactive system called LEGO SMART Play, which adds built-in electronics to physical LEGO sets to make them react with sounds, lights, and movement.

The system was shown this week at CES 2026 and represents one of LEGO’s biggest changes to traditional play in decades. Unlike app-based or screen-driven toys, LEGO SMART Play is designed to work entirely through the bricks themselves.

At the centre of the system is a new SMART Brick, which looks like a regular LEGO piece but contains sensors, a speaker, and a small computer chip. When combined with SMART Minifigures and small tagged bricks, the sets can respond to what kids do while building and playing. For example, moving a character or vehicle can trigger sounds, music, or reactions from other parts of the build.

The first LEGO SMART Play sets will be based on Star Wars, with three launch kits announced. Rough CAD pricing after exchange rates are in brackets below:

Each set includes at least one SMART Brick, SMART Minifigures, and tags that unlock interactive effects like engine sounds, blaster fire, lightsaber hums, and music tied to the scene being played out. LEGO says the SMART Play parts are compatible with existing LEGO bricks, meaning kids can mix them into their own creations rather than being locked into a single build.

Pre-orders for the Star Wars SMART Play sets open this Friday, January 9, with a full release planned for March 1, 2026, in select markets. LEGO has shared pricing for the U.S., Europe, the U.K., and Australia, but Canadian pricing has not been announced yet. We’ll find out in three days though, because the Canadian LEGO website lists these sets for pre-order.

LEGO says more SMART Play sets and themes will be revealed in the future, suggesting this is the start of a larger platform rather than a one-off experiment.
