Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony Interactive Entertainment Share Joint Statement on Player Saftey

Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony Interactive Entertainment have issued a joint statement regarding online player safety in 2026 and beyond. This is a follow-up to the shared commitment the three publishers shared back in 2020.

On Xbox Wirethe latest statement from the three major companies focuses on the prioritization of empowering players and parents to control online gaming experiences. Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony Interactive Entertainment are also committing to working with third-party companies and regulators to “advance player safety.” The three publishers also reaffirm that they hold the responsibility for player safety within their respective ecosystems.

Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony Interactive Entertainment are firmly committed to providing controls that allow players to customize gaming experiences. Whether this is to control voice chat options when playing online games, set online status, or curate settings that are appropriate for younger players. The three companies are committing to informing players and parents about the codes of conduct and terms of use that are in place.

Working with organizations and regulators like  Thriving in Games Group and the Family Online Safety Institute, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony Interactive Entertainment are committing to the collaborative work of these experts. This includes the ratings standards in place via the ESRB and PEGI.

However, at the core of it all, player safety ultimately falls on the publishers and hardware manufacturers. Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony Interactive Entertainment re-commit to making it easy for players to report violations of their respective codes of conduct and community guidelines. The three companies state that content that’s not suitable for their services is removed, and players undergoing misconduct are removed.

“This partnership reflects our dedication to collaborating on solutions that enhance player safety and ensure our games are welcoming for everyone,” the statement reads. “The video game industry has a strong legacy of prioritizing player safety, especially for children. At the same time, we recognize that these challenges require collaboration and shared values, and so we welcome others to commit to the safety and well-being of players everywhere.”
