How Craig Federighi is Fixing Apple’s AI Strategy

According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple’s software chief Craig Federighi is now leading a revamped AI strategy for the company, a broader plan to fix years of delays and internal friction that held Apple back in the AI race (via MacRumors).

For years, Siri has felt like a basic voice tool that often struggled with complex requests. That is about to change. Apple is reportedly working on a project code-named “Campos” that will replace the current Siri architecture with a much more powerful system.

The brains of the new Siri will likely be powered by Google’s Gemini, following a multi-year partnership agreement signed recently. This version of Siri will be smarter and more conversational. Instead of just setting timers or checking the weather, it will be able to answer complex questions, summarize long emails, and even understand what is happening on your iPhone screen to help you finish tasks.

While the underlying technology is changing, the way you use it won’t. You will still be able to say “Siri” or hold the side button, but the interface will look more like a chatbot.

The AI push isn’t just about software. Apple is also exploring a new wearable device that could be the size of an AirTag. This “AI Pin” would feature cameras, microphones, and a speaker to help it “see” and “hear” the world around you.

While still in the early stages, this device could launch as early as 2027. It’s designed to be a companion to your iPhone rather than a replacement for it. Apple is also reportedly working on a smart home display with a rotating base. These projects were previously delayed because Siri wasn’t smart enough to handle them.

Customers can expect to see the first major signs of this overhaul in iOS 26.4 later this year, with the full “chatbot” experience arriving with iOS 27 in late 2026. This timeline aligns with the launch of the iPhone 18, which is rumored to feature even more dedicated AI hardware.
