OpenAI Eyes $60 Billion Investment from Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon

According to a new report from The Information (via Reuters), OpenAI is currently in discussions with Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon for a combined investment that could reach as high as $60 billion.

If finalized, this would represent one of the largest private funding rounds in the history of the technology sector. It also signals that the “Magnificent Seven” tech giants are more committed than ever to ensuring OpenAI remains the dominant force in generative AI, even as competition from Google and Anthropic intensifies.

The scale of this potential deal is staggering. Nvidia, whose specialized chips are the lifeblood of OpenAI’s training models, is reportedly considering an investment of up to $30 billion. This would deepen an already tight relationship; Nvidia isn’t just an investor but the primary supplier of the hardware OpenAI needs to survive.

Amazon is also looking to make a massive splash. The report suggests Amazon could commit significantly more than $10 billion, with some estimates reaching $20 billion. This would be a first-time direct stake for the retail and cloud giant, potentially including a deal where OpenAI expands its use of Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Microsoft, OpenAI’s longest-standing and most significant backer, is in talks to add another $10 billion to its existing multi-billion-dollar commitment.

This $60 billion injection is reportedly part of a broader fundraising effort that could total $100 billion. Earlier this week, news surfaced that SoftBank is also looking to add $30 billion to its recent $41 billion investment.

Should these deals close, OpenAI’s valuation is expected to soar to approximately $830 billion. To put that in perspective, that would make the startup more valuable than most of the companies on the S&P 500, cementing Sam Altman’s firm as the world’s most valuable private enterprise.
