Gemini January 2026 Update Brings Auto Browse for Mac

Google has officially rolled out its massive January 2026 update for Gemini, bringing a wave of new features that turn the AI from a simple chatbot into a proactive personal assistant.

The latest drop introduces Gemini 3, the company’s most intelligent model yet, and integrates it deeply into Chrome, Google Maps, and Workspace. For iPhone and Mac users, these updates significantly change how we interact with Google’s ecosystem on the web and on the move.

The headline feature is “Auto Browse,” powered by the new Gemini 3 model. Available for Chrome on macOS and Windows, this tool allows Gemini to actually complete tasks for you rather than just providing text answers.

If you are planning a trip or shopping, you can open a new side panel in Chrome and ask Gemini to handle the heavy lifting. For example, it can go to a site like Etsy, find items within your budget for a specific event, and add them to your cart. It can even search for discount codes and manage logins through the Google Password Manager. To keep things safe, Google has included a “Take over task” button so you can stop the AI at any time.

Google Maps is also getting a big boost. Gemini is now available hands-free for people walking or biking. Previously, these conversational features were mostly for drivers.

Now, you can tap the Gemini icon or say “Hey Google” while navigating on your iPhone to ask questions like, “What is this neighborhood known for?” or “Find a vegan cafe with a bathroom on my route.” It can even handle multi-step tasks, such as finding a place, checking the parking situation, and then adding it as a stop to your journey without you ever having to stop or type.

Google is moving away from “one-size-fits-all” AI. A new feature called Personal Intelligence allows Gemini to remember the context of your past conversations to give more tailored help.

The “Connected Apps” feature has also expanded. Gemini can now look through your Gmail, Google Drive, and Calendar as one unified system. For instance, you could say, “Find the details for my dentist appointment in my email and block off time on my calendar to get there.”

Lastly, you can now transform or edit images you find on the web instantly. You no longer need to download a photo, open a separate editor, and re-upload it. You can simply ask Gemini to change the style of an image or turn data into a visual infographic right there in the browser.

Cool feature! Auto Browse on Mac sounds handy if it can actually handle real tasks for you.
