Don’t Let Your iPhone 8 Die: Apple’s New Update Saves iMessage Until 2027
Apple has released software updates today for older devices, such as your ancient iPhone 8 and older iPads.
- iOS 16.7.14 (20H370)
- iPadOS 16.7.14 (20H370)
- macOS 11.7.11 (20G1443)
- watchOS 10.6.2 (21U594)
- watchOS 9.6.4 (20U512)
These updates come one week after Apple initially released iOS and iPadOS 16.7.13 and more.
According to the release notes, this is a certificate update so older devices can continue to use iMessage and FaceTime beyond January 2027, reports MacRumors.
Below are the devices that suppot iOS 16 and iPadOS 16…
iPhones Supporting iOS 16
- iPhone 14 series (all models)
- iPhone 13 series (all models)
- iPhone 12 series (all models)
- iPhone 11 series (all models)
- iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR
- iPhone X
- iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
- iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)
iPads Supporting iPadOS 16
- iPad Pro: All models (including the original 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch)
- iPad Air: 3rd generation and later
- iPad: 5th generation and later
- iPad mini: 5th generation and later
You can update your iPhone and iPad by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

Seeing software updates for the iPhone 8 was not on my 2026 bingo card!!
The wording that it supports these services beyond January 2027 makes me think that they were already being supported until then, but now they’ll go further…I would think it would extend it until at least January 2028 (at which point the iPhone 8 and iPhone X will be 10 years old!), but I haven’t seen anyone do a deep-dive on when these new certificates expire
