Sega Ends Support for Classic Sonic Games: How to Play Ad-Free

Sega has issued ‘End of Service’ messages for the 2013 remasters of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on mobile platforms, which are for iOS and Android. This update signals that Sega is officially discontinuing support for these versions of the games, which were based on a freemium model.
The changes include the removal of online leaderboards for both titles and the loss of multiplayer functionality in Sonic 2. This move follows a similar trend from last May, when Sega delisted Sonic CD and both episodes of Sonic 4.
Recent updates to the iOS versions on the Apple App Store, specifically versions 5.0.3 and 6.0.3, have implemented these changes within the last 24 hours. A significant side effect of this service end is that players who already have these updated games on their iPhones or iPads can now play them without ads or in-app purchases.
iPhone in Canada reader, Dave, explains a screenshot in the Sonic game after the update reads, “End of Service. Support for this game will be discontinued, but you can continue playing offline! If you’d like to learn about more great SEGA games to play, please click the link below.”
While the Apple versions are already updated, the Android versions on the Google Play Store have not seen an update since October 2025 and still say you can pay to remove ads. It remains unclear if or when Android users will receive the same ad-free experience.
We saw SEGA release Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for iOS users for free back in 2017, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the game that debuted on the SEGA Genesis console back in 1992. The release was part of the launch of SEGA Forever that summer, where free console games were to start releasing on iOS from “every console era”.
Sad to see this end. SEGA seems to always know how to disappoint fans, I tell ya.
