Meta Signs Massive AI Chip Deal with AMD
Meta and AMD have officially joined forces, announcing a multi-year partnership focused on creating a specialized infrastructure for Meta’s future AI goals. The long-term agreement is a deep collaboration where both companies will design hardware and software together.
The scale of this agreement is hard to overstate. Meta plans to deploy up to 6 gigawatts of computing power using AMD Instinct graphics processing units (GPUs). To put that number in perspective, one gigawatt is roughly enough electricity to power 700,000 homes. By the time this project is fully realized, it will represent enough energy to power over 4 million households.
One of the most unique parts of this deal is the financial structure. Unlike a standard purchase, AMD is giving Meta the chance to become a major owner of the company. Meta has been issued performance-based warrants that could allow it to acquire up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock. If all milestones are met, Meta could end up owning about 10% of the chipmaker.
Starting in the second half of 2026, AMD will begin shipping custom versions of its next-generation MI450 chips. These are being built specifically for Meta’s unique needs. They will be paired with the 6th Gen AMD EPYC processors, which are currently known by the code name Venice.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained the reasoning behind the move during the announcement. He stated: “We’re excited to form a long-term partnership with AMD to deploy efficient inference compute and deliver personal superintelligence. This is an important step for Meta as we diversify our compute. I expect AMD to be an important partner for many years to come.”
While Meta has traditionally relied heavily on Nvidia for its AI chips, this move shows a clear desire to have more options. By working with AMD, Meta can customize its hardware to be more energy-efficient and faster for specific tasks like running the Llama language models that power its AI assistants.
