Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max Arrive with the World’s Fastest CPU Super Cores
Apple has officially pulled the curtain back on its latest high-end silicon, the M5 Pro and M5 Max. These new chips are designed to power the next generation of 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, offering a significant leap in performance.
The standout feature of this release is what Apple calls its Fusion Architecture. Instead of using a traditional single-chip design, Apple has found a way to bond two high-performance dies together into one system. This allows the M5 Pro and M5 Max to share information much faster than previous generations.
The M5 Pro features a CPU with up to 18 cores, which includes six “super cores” designed for the most intense tasks and 12 cores dedicated to efficiency. This combination makes the new MacBook Pro roughly 30 percent faster than the M4 models. For those who need even more power, the M5 Max takes things further by doubling the graphics capability and supporting up to 128GB of memory.
Artificial intelligence is the clear focus of this update. Apple has added a “Neural Accelerator” to every single core of the GPU. This change allows the MacBook Pro to handle AI tasks, such as generating images or running large language models, up to four times faster than last year’s models.
Professional users who deal with massive files will be pleased to see that storage speeds have doubled. The new SSDs can reach read and write speeds of 14.5GB/s, which means moving 8K video files or large data sets will happen almost instantly. Apple has also increased the starting storage capacity: the M5 Pro now starts with a 1TB drive, while the M5 Max begins at 2TB.
Pre-orders for the new lineup begin on March 4, 2026, with the first units arriving to customers on March 11.
