Google AI Integrates Canvas Directly into Search
Google is fundamentally changing how people interact with its search engine by turning the search bar into a full-scale production tool. A new feature called AI Mode is now available directly within Google Search, providing a dedicated ‘Canvas’ for writing and coding projects.
This means that instead of just looking for information and then moving to a different app to do the work, you can now draft, edit, and debug right where you started your search.
The update introduces a side-by-side interface. On one side, you have your conversation with the AI, and on the other, a workspace that holds your text or code. This layout is designed to solve one of the biggest frustrations with early AI tools: the constant need to copy and paste text between different windows. Now, the AI can see your entire project at once and make changes directly to the document.
For writers, the integration into Search offers a much faster way to polish their work. You can highlight a specific paragraph and ask the AI to change the tone, make the text shorter, or check for grammar errors. There are also built-in sliders that allow you to adjust the reading level of your content.
The new canvas is equally useful for people who write code. When you are working on a programming project, you can use the AI to review your work for bugs or explain what a particular piece of logic is doing. Because the tool is built into Search, you can quickly look up documentation and then apply those findings to your code in the same window.
The interface includes specific buttons for coding tasks, such as “Review code” or “Add comments.” This helps keep your workspace organised and reduces the mental load of switching between tabs. If the AI finds an error, it can propose a fix and show you exactly how the corrected code should look.
Google is not the first company to create a side-by-side AI workspace, but placing it directly in Search is certainly a bold move.
