Assassin’s Creed Shadows Gets Upgraded Graphics on PS5 Pro

PlayStation 5 Pro owners have a significant reason to return to feudal Japan this week. Ubisoft has officially integrated the latest version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) into Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

This update, which arrives alongside Title Update 1.1.9, promises a substantial leap in image quality and stability across all graphics modes.

Since the console’s launch, PSSR has been a cornerstone of the PS5 Pro experience, using AI-driven machine learning to upscale lower-resolution images into crisp 4K visuals. However, PSSR 2.0 represents a total shift in how the system handles complex visual data.

The primary goal of this update is to eliminate common visual “noise” and artifacts that often plague open-world games. In a recent technical deep dive, Ubisoft explained that the upgraded PSSR performs significantly better when handling motion. Players can expect a much smoother experience with fewer distracting flickers.

One of the most noticeable improvements involves the game’s “Atmos” system, which simulates wind and foliage. Thin, moving objects like blades of grass or tree branches are traditionally difficult for upscalers to process, often resulting in blurry edges or shimmering. The new PSSR preserves these fine details, keeping individual blades of grass defined even when they are swaying in a storm.

The update also tackles the challenges of real-time ray tracing. Because ray tracing generates a limited number of “rays” per frame, it can sometimes produce a grainy or “noisy” look in shadows and reflections. The updated AI library now cleans up these signals more effectively. Particle effects, such as smoke, fog, and sparks, have also seen a boost.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is available on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. The new PSSR enhancements will be available starting April 7.
