Tesla’s New $39,490 Model 3 in Canada is Cheaper Than the US
Tesla has officially relaunched the Model 3 in Canada with a new Premium Rear-Wheel Drive trim and a record-low starting price of $39,490 CAD. As reported by Tesla North, the pricing overhaul marks one of the most significant shifts in Tesla’s Canadian strategy in years, and it has some interesting implications for anyone who has been sitting on the fence about going electric.
The New Price of Entry
At $39,490 before fees, the Model 3 Premium RWD is far below the average price of a new car in Canada, which Autotrader puts at just under $63,000. Once you add in the $2,500 freight and PDI fee, $100 air conditioner excise tax, and $26 tire fee, the all-in total lands at $42,116 CAD. This is a remarkably low entry point for a premium electric vehicle.
The Model 3 Performance also received a substantial price cut, dropping 17% from $89,990 down to $74,990 CAD. This creates a massive $35,000 spread between the RWD and Performance variants.
One important caveat: because this Model 3 is manufactured in Shanghai, it does not qualify for the federal $5,000 iZEV rebate. However, provincial incentives in Manitoba, Quebec ($2,000), and the Yukon can still be stacked, dropping the effective price even further. Existing Model 3 owners in the resale market may see an immediate impact on their vehicle’s valuation following this adjustment.
Why It’s Cheaper Than the US Version
At current exchange rates, $39,490 CAD works out to roughly $29,000 USD, which is about $13,000 less than what American buyers pay for the same car. This gap is the result of Tesla shifting Canadian supply back to Gigafactory Shanghai, the company’s most cost-efficient facility.
This logistical shift was made possible by the Canola for Cars trade agreement reached earlier this year, which established a managed quota for Chinese-made EVs at a reduced 6.1% tariff rate. Consequently, Tesla can now price the Model 3 more aggressively in Canada than in almost any other global market.
A Better Battery for Daily Use
The return of Shanghai production also brings back the LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery chemistry. Unlike the nickel-based packs found in some US models, LFP batteries are designed to be charged to 100% every day without accelerated degradation. For city drivers who plug in nightly, this provides a meaningful advantage by allowing them to utilize the full rated range on a daily basis.
Tesla’s Strategic Play
The timing of this move coincides with the expected Canadian arrival of Chinese EV makers like BYD and Xiaomi later this year. Tesla appears to be preemptively anchoring the market’s price floor to make it difficult for new competitors to gain a foothold based on value alone.
