OpenAI’s AI Agent Phone Could Arrive by 2027 Says Kuo
According to a new update from supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, OpenAI has moved up the production timeline for its dedicated AI agent phone, and is now aiming for a launch as early as the first half of 2027.
The move marks a significant pivot for OpenAI as it seeks to move beyond software and into the hands of consumers with its own hardware. At the heart of the new device is a partnership with MediaTek. While Qualcomm was previously rumoured to be in the running, Kuo indicates that MediaTek is now better positioned to be the exclusive processor supplier.
OpenAI’s phone is expected to feature a customized version of the upcoming Dimensity 9600 chipset. It will reportedly be manufactured using TSMC’s cutting-edge N2P process node in late 2026. The technical specs point toward a powerhouse designed specifically for artificial intelligence.
The shift from a ChatGPT app to a physical AI Agent Phone represents a fundamental change in how we might use technology. While today’s smartphones are reactive, waiting for you to open an app, an agent phone is designed to be proactive. It is meant to understand your context and take actions on your behalf across different services without you needing to navigate a grid of icons.
By building its own hardware, OpenAI avoids the limitations of existing ecosystems like Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android. It allows the company to integrate its models directly into the silicon, creating a seamless experience where the AI isn’t just an assistant, but the operating system itself.
If development stays on schedule, Kuo predicts that OpenAI could ship roughly 30 million units across 2027 and 2028.
