Google and Apple Are Actually Working Together to Make Switching to Android Easier
Google used today’s Android Show to announce a handful of updates that will make it easier for iPhone and Android users to share files with each other, and also to switch away from the iPhone, plus a new Gemini assistant baked into Chrome.
Sharing Files Just Got Less Painful
Quick Share is getting Apple’s AirDrop compatibility, starting with Pixel phones and rolling out to Samsung, OPPO, and Xiaomi devices throughout the year. For everything else, a new QR code system lets Android users share files to iOS through the cloud, which should cover most situations where cross-platform sharing currently falls apart.
Switching from iPhone to Android is also getting easier. Google worked with Apple on a revamped wireless transfer process that moves passwords, photos, messages, apps, supports eSIM transfer and even your home screen layout over to Android. It lands first on Samsung Galaxy and Pixel phones later this year.
Chrome Is Getting an AI Assistant
In late June, Chrome for Android is adding a Gemini 3.1 assistant accessible through a new icon in the browser. You can use it to summarize long articles or ask questions about whatever page you’re on without leaving the tab.
For AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S., a feature called Auto Browse goes further. It can handle tasks inside the browser on your behalf, things like finding and booking a parking spot through SpotHero or updating a recurring order on Chewy. It asks for confirmation before anything involving money or sensitive actions goes through.
3D Emoji
Google is also refreshing its emoji set with Noto 3D, a new collection that adds depth and texture to the standard flat icons. They’re rolling out across Google platforms starting with Pixel phones later this year.

I wonder why Apple wants to make the transfer to Android easier. Could it be part of the negotiation to get Gemini to use it on an iPhone?
Read the comment I posted.
Apple is collaborating with Google on a revamped transfer process, largely to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act. This “AppMigrationKit” allows for a one-tap move of passwords, photos, eSIMs, and app layouts to Android. While the result makes switching easier, Apple’s intent is regulatory compliance rather than a shift in business philosophy. These features will land on Samsung and Pixel phones later this year. There is no cost for these software tools in Canada.
