The US Just Moved to Shut the Door on Chinese EVs Coming Through Canada
Two U.S. lawmakers want to stop Chinese connected vehicles from driving into the United States through Canada and Mexico.
Congresswoman Haley Stevens and Senator Elissa Slotkin in Michigan announced the Protecting America from Chinese Cars Act at the Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island last week. The bill would ban connected vehicles made in China or by companies with more than 15% Chinese ownership from entering the US, including day trips across the border. That could put a damper in your future vacation plans if you buy a Chinese EV here.
Slotkin said in a statement, “they’re surveillance packages on wheels, fully capable of geolocating individual drivers, collecting full-motion video, and mapping sensitive infrastructure sites, including our military.”
Ottawa recently signed a trade deal in January that slashed tariffs on Chinese EVs from 100% down to just 6.1%, opening the door to up to 49,000 Chinese cars per year. Prime Minister Mark Carney expects that within five years, over half of these imports will be “affordable EVs with an import price of less than $35,000,” making for cheaper EVs for Canadians.
BYD, Chery and Geely are all actively preparing to enter the Canadian market, with BYD reportedly planning 20 Canadian sales sites in 2026 and Chery already spotted testing vehicles on Ontario roads. None of these are expected to reach Canadian showrooms until late 2026 at the earliest, but the pipeline is clearly filling up fast. Chinese EVs have already grabbed a 15% market share in Mexico, and US lawmakers are worried Canada is next, giving these vehicles a backdoor into the American market from the north.
Stevens framed it as both a security and a jobs issue. “The Chinese Communist Party should never have access to sensitive information about American drivers, roads, or critical infrastructure. The Protect America from Chinese Cars Act closes dangerous loopholes that currently allow Chinese connected vehicles to enter the United States through Canada and Mexico.”
If passed, the bill gives US Customs and Border Protection 90 days to publish a list of banned vehicles and develop enforcement procedures. There’s also a process for manufacturers to apply for exemptions under strict conditions with congressional oversight.
What does this mean? If this act passes, Canadians that buy Chinese EVs won’t be able to drive across the border into the U.S. on roadtrips, which would definitely put damper on travel plans. It would also discourage Canadians to buy Chinese EVs as well.

Thank god!! USA coming to the rescue of these Canadian Libtards.
Won’t stop Canadians from buying them. Canadians already quit propping up American tourism. They have discovered the rest of the world to spend thier vaca money. Really no reason to cross the boarder anymore outside of work related and then you fly. Really dont see this measure of having any effect at all. American exported whisky has lost its biggest customer as well and will stay that way until you remove the crimminal from running your country into the ground. Have a lovely day eh.
It kind of makes me want to but one of these cars just so I can’t cross the border… It’s better than getting a criminal record to stop me if I forget!! 🙂
Hahahaha, like we need to be rescued by America Idiocracy.
Brain dead in breeder. Any point you made was lost. Go move there MaGgAt
Says the American idiot who believes this ? Guess what. No one wants to visit the USA. Dumpster fire sinking country thinks they run the show ? lol
American or american export maggots must speak their stupidity for all the world to hear.
US and Canadian citizens should be more concerned on the surveillance our own governments are doing to us and not what China or any others could or could not be doing.
Block them for having the wrong flavor of surveillance? Next will be reports that they’ll be approved if Flock is allowed to modify the surveillance system a bit… then you won’t hear about it anymore.
Wouldn’t discourage me from buying one. If the US doesnt want me to come and spend money shopping, restaurants, etc, no problem. I’ll spend it elsewhere.
LMAO do they think this will stop us from buying them? I don’t give a rats ass about crossing to the US when I’m making a decision buying a vehicle. I used to rarely cross the border and after this administration, my crossing number is ZERO
bullying doesn’t work anymore
It doesn’t put any damper on vacation plans, it just makes the “U”SA even less attractive to visit. Pretty soon even the few Canadians that might still want to visit the “U”SA won’t bother. Sounds like a great plan to me!!
bot many Canadians actually could care less if we can’t drive to the US. This actually makes me want to buy a Chinese made EV even more.
good luck trying to differentiate a Tesla made in China vs one made in Texas
Lol they don’t need the cars. They just need google Earth. Oy you Americans are very strange people.
Surveillance? Really? That is a stretch considering that anyone could open Google Maps and see the same things at street view.
What about Volvo ?
Oh the land of the free and the home of the brave. The US is a joke. They just banned Chinese made Tesla. Lol Idiots.
They just want us to continue to buy US junk vehicles that are overpriced, and made by their workforce.
They may as well ban Chinese made iPhones and buy Trump Phones instead.
