Microsoft 365 Support to End on Older Macs and iPhones Starting in July
Microsoft has announced that it’s ending editing support of Microsoft 365, Office 2019, and Office 2021 on older Macs and iPhones next month.
Starting on July 13th, users running Office apps on older versions of macOS and iOS won’t be able to edit or create files. Instead, users running older hardware will only be able to view existing files. Within a blog post, Microsoft states that this is being referred to as “reduced functionality mode.”
Users will still be able to open and print files. However, those running older software won’t be able to edit, save or create new files. “This happens when support for Microsoft Office apps is no longer continued for older operating systems or devices,” the blog post reads.
“This issue affects both Microsoft 365 subscribers on macOS, iPhone, and iPad, and those with non-subscription software, including Office 2021 or Office 2019 on macOS,” the company says. The changes will be made across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote, as well as Office 2019 and Office 2021.
To maintain regular access and functionality, Microsoft urges all users to ensure they are running macOS 12 or later on their Mac devices. On iPhone, users must have iOS 17 or later installed to avoid issues on July 13th and beyond.
If your device isn’t compatible with macOS 12 or iOS 17 or later, there are a few workarounds. Microsoft says users can use the browser version of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Users can copy local files to OneDrive and access them online. Alternatively, and humorously, Microsoft suggest simply using another device. In this case, you can sign in with your Microsoft account and install Microsoft 365 on a supported device.

I was getting the nag bar re: disabling of functionality within Home Office & Business 2021 on my old MacBook Air (2017 running Monterey) used for work and travel – and not just the inability of it to update.
Digging about on the net, I found someone who had similar issue with this app – and he spent a great deal of time with Microsoft Support to get it fixed. He posted the steps and I decided to give it a go, and it seems to have restored functionality. For now.
Here, in a nutshell, is the procedure.
1. Find, download, install and let run the Office License Removal Tool.
2. Uninstall your Office apps.
3. Sign into your Microsoft Account. Scroll down the page and find your Office application on file and use Install button to download it. File will call itself a variation of 365 and Office, but don’t let that throw you. You’ll be installing the standalone.
– a sidebar here. That Installer was only good for OS 14 and above. As my Air is running Monterey (OS 12), that wasn’t going to work. Fortunately, I had kept the original Installer. Hope you did too if older MacOS. Not sure if it still exists online somewhere.
4. Run Installer. Once complete, it will open up Update. Let that run. I made the mistake of clicking ‘auto check for updates’ which I turned off later – I think causes a nag bar (no updates available for OS 12).
Open, say, Excel, follow sign-in instructions and should be okay. Nag bar closed and did not return once I turned off auto-updates.
Works for now. We’ll see what July 13 brings. But I have LibreOffice in my back pocket should I need to go that route on the Air.
As for my M2 on Tahoe running the same Office Suite (another license), no such nonsense. Yet. But its support runs out in October, so we’ll just see what silly stuff happens then. Again, there’s LibreOffice.
