Apple Intelligence Makes Home Cameras Smarter, Simplifies Shortcuts

Apple is expanding Apple Intelligence with new features in the Home app and Shortcuts, aiming to make everyday tasks easier and more automated, as announced at WWDC.

In the Home app, Apple Intelligence can now group related smart home alerts into a single notification that updates as an activity unfolds. Instead of receiving multiple notifications for events happening around the same time, users will see one notification that provides ongoing updates.

Apple is also adding AI-powered video analysis for compatible home security cameras. The Home app can automatically generate descriptions of recorded clips, helping users quickly understand what happened without watching the footage.

The system can also search camera recordings based on what appears in the video. For example, users can search for package deliveries or other events and find footage across multiple cameras. Apple says the Home app can connect related clips together to provide a complete view of an activity.

In addition, Apple announced support for viewing recorded camera footage in 4K resolution on supported devices.

Apple is also making major changes to Shortcuts, its automation tool for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Users can now create shortcuts by simply describing what they want in natural language. Apple Intelligence analyzes the request and automatically builds the required workflow.

For example, a user could type, “When I’m leaving work, message Pedro I’m on my way with my ETA.” Shortcuts would then create an automation that detects when the user leaves work, calculates the travel time home using Maps, and sends a message with the estimated arrival time.

Users can further refine shortcuts by describing additional changes, such as automatically playing a favourite podcast.

Apple says the update makes Shortcuts easier to use for people who may have found the app too complex in the past (it was ridiculously complex).

The new Home and Shortcuts features are part of Apple’s broader push to integrate Apple Intelligence throughout its apps and services.
