Canada Ranks Among the Best for Streaming the World Cup. The Race Is Closer Than You Think.
Canada has landed a spot among the world’s top performers for fixed-line internet streaming, coming in eighth overall among the countries taking part in this year’s FIFA World Cup.
The numbers come from a new study by France-based internet performance platform nPerf, which emailed the findings to iPhone in Canada on Tuesday. The study looked at network data collected between January and May 2026, and zeroed in on the 20 strongest streaming nations to see how smoothly their connections could handle video at 720p, 1080p, and 2160p.
Canada posted a streaming performance score of 88.8 percent, which put it in a tight pack near the top. The United States took first with 91.4 percent, with Switzerland right behind at 91.3 percent and France at 90.6 percent.
One of the takeaways from the study is that raw speed isn’t the whole story. Plenty of countries have fast networks, but the top-ranked ones stand out by being more consistent. Things like latency, network capacity, stability, and how close the content delivery networks sit all play a big role in how well video actually plays.
For the average person in Canada, an 88.8 percent score means a smooth, comfortable experience for everyday browsing and regular video. nPerf did note that the gap between Canada and the top three becomes more obvious when networks are under strain, like during peak viewing hours, live sports, or demanding 4K streams.
The overall field is incredibly close. Only 10.6 percentage points separate the United States in first from Saudi Arabia in 20th. The World Cup kicks off this week on June 11, with Canada playing its first game on June 12 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto.
