WhatsApp is Finally Bringing Disappearing Messages to iOS
WhatsApp for iPhone will soon receive a native view-once option specifically for standard text messages, that will finally match the disappearing media options that users have relied on for years.
The feature was uncovered by WABetaInfo in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS release (version 26.24.10.16) available through Apple’s TestFlight program. The tool is still hidden deep within the code and is not yet available to public beta testers.
According to early testing data, triggering a view-once text message will be simple and intuitive. After typing out your message in the normal chat bar, you will not just tap the send arrow. Instead, you will long-press the send button.
This long-press gesture opens a brand-new contextual dropdown menu. From this menu, you can select the option to “Send as view once.” Once you hit send, the text will be delivered with a special privacy badge.
When the recipient opens the message, they can read it exactly once. As soon as they close the chat window or navigate away, the text content becomes completely inaccessible. The text box will simply vanish or show an expired status block, ensuring that your sensitive information does not sit around in a chat logs history forever.
Meta is building this feature with the exact same strict security rules that govern disappearing photos, videos, and voice notes. To stop people from secretly keeping your data, WhatsApp will implement the following safety measures:
- No Copying: The recipient will be completely blocked from highlighting and copying the text to their clipboard.
- No Forwarding: The app disables the forwarding arrow entirely for any view-once bubble, preventing it from spreading to other chats.
- Screenshot Blocking: If an iPhone user tries to take a quick screenshot or start a screen recording of the message, WhatsApp will block the action and display a black screen instead.
Of course, someone could always use a secondary phone or a physical camera to take a picture of their screen. WhatsApp cannot stop physical real-world actions, but they are doing everything possible within the iOS software limits to lock down the digital side.
