Meta’s Muse Image Platform Uses Your Public Instagram Posts to Generate AI Content

Meta is introducing its new Muse Image platform, the first image generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs. Muse Image, by design, lets users add photos and images, including those taken from Instagram, and generate AI content.
Muse Image leverages tools across many of Meta’s apps, including Meta AI, Instagram, and WhatsApp. For instance, by default, there is a setting that allows anyone to use Meta AI to generate AI content from your public Instagram content.
As Meta explains in a blog post, Meta AI can pull images from an Instagram account by using only an @-mention. “You can also @-mention Instagram accounts in the Meta AI app to bring specific Instagram profiles right into your images,” the company says. “Whether you want to design a custom event invitation, mock up a collaborative creative concept, or generate a personalized graphic, tagging a username lets Meta AI use public photos to build a visual that’s ready to post.”
While exploring a support page on Instagram, it states that all public accounts can be used to create AI-generated content with Meta AI’s features. “If your account is public: Anyone on Instagram can reuse all or part of your reels, feed videos, and photos shared after reuse became available.” This includes photos, reels, videos, etc. “In addition, people may be able to create content with your Instagram content using AI features at Meta.”
By default, all Instagram users are open and accessible to AI tools. Thankfully, there are options to disable content reuse for AI features. Within the Instagram app, search for the ‘Sharing and Reuse’ menu within your Settings. Here, you can toggle off both ‘Posts’ and ‘Reels’ under the ‘Allow people to create with and reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta’ option. For those with their accounts already set to Private, don’t worry, as Muse Image won’t be able to pull from your account.
Meta is aiming to bring Muse Image to more countries and places, including Facebook and Messenger. In addition, Meta is working on Muse Video, which will likely use user-generated content to help generate AI videos across its services.
