iOS 6 Public Release Is Set For September 19th

Apple has announced during their iPhone event that iOS 6 will be released on September 19th. Beta testing for the mobile operating system has been going on since the original announcement on June 11th.

Devices compatible with iOS 6: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2/3, and the fourth generation iPod touch.

iOS 6 doesn’t include any physical differences to the home screen, but does include over 200 features in total. Some huge features include Siri updates, Facebook integration, Passbook, and Maps. Here is a more in-depth description of the features from our iOS 6 overview post:

Better Siri – Finally, full Siri support for Canada, English and French! Siri will also be coming to the New iPad! Some other improvements to Siri in iOS 6: Siri has more integrated search features for sports scores, restaurants, movies, and more. Apple has partnered with companies like Yelp and Rotten Tomatoes to bring accurate, up to date information. Siri has also learned how to launch apps. Simply tell Siri to “Launch Facebook” and she does it.

Facebook Integration – Just like they introduced Twitter integration in iOS 5, Facebook integration comes to iOS 6. Similar to Twitter, you can share from photos, maps, and Safari. You can use dictation to update your status. Full contact sync, like the Facebook app does. They also announced Facebook integration is coming to the App Store and to the Mac, as well.

New App: Passbook – This is Apple’s version of Keyring, but a whole lot more. You can store all your favourite store cards in this app. If you set locations for them, they will pop up on your lock screen when ever you arrive at that store. There is alsoboarding pass integration from United Airlines, with more airlines expected to jump onboard.

The iOS 6 GM update will likely be available for developers beginning today. If we receive any more information, we will alert you.

Gonna wait and see what problems arise before taking the chance with iOS 6 on my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. I still haven’t gotten over being burned with iOS 4 on my iPhone 3G.

I would if I were you. You are probably okay with a 4s, because it is still pretty recent hardware, but you never know. IPhone 3G’s had widespread problems a couple of years ago with the iOS 4 release. My phone became frustratinly unusable after that, so now I always wait a week or so before installing new updates.

curious if installing iOS 6 on iPhone 4S will eliminate Google Map and install Apple’s Map with the turn-by-turn functions ,etc. Anything iOS6 feature only exist on the new iPhone 5 and exclude from other models? Like Siri only available to iPhone 4 & 4S and not iPhone 3S and older because they were too slow, etc.

Yes, iOS 6 on a 4S will replace Google Maps.

Any of the iOS 6 features are exclusive to the new iPhone 5 only. Like Siri for iPhone 4, 4S

The GM is on the developer site, but did not see if it was a delta upgrade or the full download… via iTunes. Ideas?
