Instagram to Allow Users to Reorder Posts on Profile Grid
The company announced the feature, saying, "You can move posts around on your Instagram grid starting this week."
RIM Major Investor: “Steve Jobs is a Much Better Marketer Than RIM”
The past 24 hours haven’t been Research In Motion. Yesterday the Waterloo-based company announced their Q2 revenue numbers and they were below estimates, disappointing investors. Revenue was expected to be between $4.2-4.8 billion, a billion below analyst estimates of $5.47 billion. Not only that, RIM will be laying off workers as well. The stock price has hit a four year low, under $28/share as of writing.
Here are some key stats from yesterday’s earnings announcement:
Q1 revenue: $4.9 billion vs. $5.15 billion consensus
Q1 EPS: $1.33 vs. $1.32 consensus
Q1 shipments: 13.2 million vs. 13.5 million units expectedQ2 revenue: $4.2-$4.8 billion vs. $5.46 billion consensus
Q2 EPS: $0.75-$1.05 vs. $1.40 consensus
Q2 shipments: None given vs. 13.5-14 million units expectation
Notice RIM noted 500,000 shipped units of their PlayBook tablet–but did not reveal the actual numbers sold.
With all this drama occurring, this morning RIM’s sixth biggest investor outed the company and announced they will be dumping 50% of their 10.2 million shares in the company. Stephen Jarislowsky, chairman of Jarislowsky Fraser Ltd. had this to say:
“We are on the way out. The stake has been reduced by more than 50% or even more…They are resting on their laurels…”
…and here’s the ultimate parting shot:
“Steve Jobs is a much better marketer than RIM”
Ouch. Will RIM be able to recover and keep up with Apple and Google? What do they need to do in order to survive?

Their arrogant and delusion. The fact they fought a patent suit that they could have settle for just a few million for over a half-billion a few years later shows that, not to mention they were censured by the judge in the case for fabricating evidence of prior technology.
They need to get their head out of their ass. Their old grandpa style phone clearly isn’t going anywhere. We are way over represented here in southern Ontario. If you go elsewhere Blackberries are not that common.
I see Blackberries vs. iPhones in this simple view. What can they do better than my iPhone? I honestly can’t say there is anything that they do better other than break. Â They’re behind the curve and falling further back.

Yeah, the tough talk from RIM about how ‘great it is’ compared to the competition has come to an end. Their numbers aren’t backing anything up right now. The PlayBook is the BlackBerry Storm of tablets.

1) AppWorld…. Developers are really frustrated with their methods. I understand that they want to make it a secure system, but look at what Google and Apple have done.
2) Hardware… While the Playbook is a sweet device specs wise, the lack of apps for it stinks. Also they need to release a nice sleek phone. The Torch was close but it was too thick imo…
This is a good time for RIM to make a turn around. I hope they release an amazing phone by the end of the year. Apple is most likely going to release only a slight update but nothing spectacular. This is a good year to play catch up… But FIX APP WORLD FIRST!

Time to start firing people, starting with Laz and Balsillie cause RIM hasn’t really seen any new innovation. They bought a company to stay in the game but with phones that are last gen even before release is pretty bad.
RIM needs to pump more money into R&D and make beautiful and spec worthy phones and stop wasting money on spec pumping older handsets. I don’t wanna see three spec pumps for the same phone (like the curve and bold) Even their storm touchscreen phones were garbage. They also need to stop this vision of being equal to Apple and Motorola.

Steve is a better marketer but the real problem is that rimm is behind by about 4 years and that makes it very difficult to catch up. They did not see where things were going whereas Jobs has been preparing for this direction for as long as I can remember.

A revamp just isn’t enough. It is all about software now and apple and android are leagues ahead. Apple especially is able to leverage developer tools that they have been perfecting on the Mac for years.
Nokia and rimm are falling behind because they don’t have the same strenghth in software that apple and google have. Everyone can do hardware now but the differentiator is the software. And that just isn’t something you can build or acquire overnight.
Microsoft has a chance of catching up because they are a strong software shop but rimm has little chance of catching up at. Nokia faced the same issue and they decided they had no choice but to partner with Microsoft.
