Amazon Raising Price of Prime Membership in Canada by 25%
The price of Amazon’s Prime membership is about to increase in price in Canada, says the company. The news comes after Amazon increased the price of Prime in the U.S. back in February.
According to The Canadian Press, the Prime price increases are set to start in May. Here are the price changes below and when they will kick into effect:
- Monthly: $9.99 per month (was $7.99/month); starts May 13
- Yearly: $99 per year (was $79/year); starts at next renewal
The price increase works out to a 25% jump for the monthly fee, while the annual option also increases by the same amount. The updated prices will apply to new and existing customers.
According to Amazon, the decision was made as it “continues to invest heavily in Prime”, citing wider product selection and also a recent introduction of free one-day shipping on most items in major Canadian cities, without a minimum $25 purchase needed.
The last Amazon Prime price increase in Canada took place in January 2013. Prime membership also includes access to the Prime Video streaming service, which has bolstered its library over the years.

I also noticed the things I buy are often higher price on prime than on non-prime accounts to cover shipping probably. Perhaps I just don’t need prime anymore, I really never need immediate shipping.
Yeah, I agree. The hyper fast shipping is really unnecessary and sometimes even a detriment, as I won’t be home the day they want to come anyway, and it’s so brutal on the employees who have to defecate in bags, suffer heat stroke and collapse etc.
Over the past couple of years, I’ve been offered a free one month trial of prime, accept it and then cancel before the offer expires. It works out great that way.
It was evident that Prime would go up in Canada as the $79 CAD price point stayed the same even after the US price was hiked 2-3 times ($79>$99>$119>$139 USD) since Prime was introduced in Canada.
I’d say we get a good deal even after the new price hike and exchange rates.
Make sense for them they acquired MGM Studio for 8.5 Billion also we getting a lot more on prime Video now that Amazon own and MGM all Back catalogs we get all 22 title of JAMES BOND Movies & Stargate TV Shows & Movies can’t wait for them beefing up there prime video soon
Which is good because before then Prime seemed to have the the worst in selection among the streaming services. Even Crave was more appealing to me then Prime.

Paramount+ any new Star Trek that’s being developed in film and TV shows Movies that’s coming out in Canada will go straight to Streaming service after 45 days in theaters from now on like Sonic 2, Top Gun: Maverick and The Lost City straight to Paramount+ Canada

Event webcast Investor Day meeting Feb 24th they released SCREAM 5 in theaters & SVOD in February most theaters were closed here in Canada-and now its Paramount+ Canada After 45 days so that’s just the beginning what they do for the following summer blockbuster movies Paramount is a Distributor in Canada

Aw I feel super bad for the company owned by one of the richest man on Earth. He probably needs this 25% increase because of the pandemic.
25%, huh? I’m not sure I buy often enough – or require an item *right now* – to justify the hike. And while they have invested in their own products in their video service, it and a majority of the services they offer in Prime are ‘virtual’, and using subscribers’ broadband or data to get it to us. Maybe we should start charging Bezos for the free use of our internet service to get the product to us? Or just threaten to start a subscribers’ union….
It’s not about how often you need it. It about whether or not shipping costs went up by 25%.
Amazon shipping price haven’t changed. Also shipping if free for a cart over 35$. The only difference is speed

On 3 occasions when I was taking advantage of a one month free trial, not one order was delivered faster than with standard free shipping. If I can’t get faster shipping, Prime Video is not good enough reason for me to pay for Prime. I’m not sure the faster shipping would be good enough reason either to pay them $99 a year.
I have no issues with this price increase considering there has not been an increase since introduced in Canada in 2013. Also, with everything you get including free shipping, access to Prime video (which is slowly getting better), Amazon Music, and unlimited photo storage. Not to mention, I can’t see the point in complaining over $1.67 a month. However, it would be nice if they introduced a family sharing price (Amazon Household) like in the USA.
I lucked out, mine just renewed last week so I’m good until March 2023.
Yes! I’ve been waiting forever for Family sharing to share the Prime membership with the family.
And the wealthy or those who have poor financial restraint would gladly pay $20 for a small cleaning cloth from Apple. Yup. Society is regressing. Thank you for contributing to it.
