Hon Hai Precision Industry a.k.a Foxconn, the largest manufacturer of Apple iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices, is considering an investment of $40 million in manufacturing and research facilities in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, Reuters is reporting.
The Taiwanese manufacturer has said that it will invest $30 million over the next two years to hire 500 employees in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in order to build a high-end supply chain. In the next phase, it will invest $10 million to jointly develop robotics with Carnegie Mellon University. The source points out that the manufacturer’s decision to invest in the U.S. is “a part of its diversification away” from the low-margin contract business.
“Investing in the U.S. is not for manufacturing for specific brands as speculated in the market,” company chairman Terry Gou said. “We are here to build a high-precision, high-tech and high value-added manufacturing industry.”
Foxconn has previously also announced plans to build a plant in Arizona to make large display panels and large-panel TVs to expand in the U.S. market.
