iOS 15.4 Includes Trade-In Tool to Scan Details of Device Using iPhone Camera

Apple has recently released the first iOS 15.4 beta to developers. The new software update includes useful features including FaceID with mask support, Universal Control, and notes on iCloud Keychain. However, one interesting feature is a trade-in tool that uses the iPhone’s camera to scan other devices.

As detailed by 9to5Mac, the tool utilizes the camera to scan possible details and defects that may impact a customer’s ability to trade in their old device for credits to go towards a new one. The existence of this tool was found within the internal files of iOS 15.4 beta 1.

Based on the report, the camera will scan another device to search for cosmetic issues such as scratches, dents, and chipped or broken screens. Following the scan, the details will then be sent to Apple. The company will then evaluate how much it will be able to pay the customer for their old device. Many contributing factors go into Apple’s trade-in process such as the severity of scratches and cosmetic damages.

The tool may be able to streamline the whole ordeal and make a more transparent equation for the customer. At times, it may be harder to pinpoint how much an older iPhone may cost and setting expectations accordingly could help the customer make a wiser purchase on a new device.

It’s also worth noting that Apple is working to develop a self-repair program for users in the US and expand it to other countries in 2022. The new tool could go a long way to help customers identify which parts are needed to replace.

As of now, iOS 15.4 beta is now available for developers. The official release is expected sometime later this spring.
