How to Update iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 via WinPwn (VIDEO)!

*edit* Just to let everyone know, this tutorial has been outdated and needs updating. If you want to update your first gen iPhone to 2.x.x firmware, this is what you need to do:

1. Sync your iPhone. Update in iTunes to 2.2.1 firmware. You can use the latest version of iTunes.

2. Download QuickPwn (either Mac or PC) and the 3.9/4.6 bootloader files (links below).

3. Launch QuickPwn and follow the instructions.

4. Afterwards, your iPhone should be jailbroken and unlocked! I’m going to have an upcoming post on how to do this in more detail.

I remember the days of owning my first generation iPhone (my significant other uses it now). The jailbreaking/activating/unlocking game certainly was a lot of fun, but now that I have my iPhone 3G those days are over–or are they? My first gen iPhone is still on the stable 1.1.4 firmware. Since the release of 2.0 and 2.0.1 I’ve been itching to update my firmware. I know a lot of you first gen users are still on 1.1.4. I’ve also received emails asking for a guide on how to update–well your wish has now come true!

I finally took some time one night to get everything setup to prepare myself for this update. I followed the guide from iClarified carefully on how to update and jailbreak 2.0.1 using WinPwn 2.0.0.4. However, the guide forget to mention one critical step: clicking iPwner after the Custom IPSW has been created (this might not make a lot of sense now, but it will–trust me!). This resulted in me getting the “error 1600″ message in iTunes. I definitely had a OMG moment but after a quick Google search, I found the solution. So please watch my video carefully on what to do.

How to Update iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 via WinPwn (Windows users only)

1. You will need to have iTunes 7.7.1 installed. You might also need the .NET Framework for Windows XP users.

2. Download the following files and put them into a folder on your desktop (name it winpwn):

  • WinPwn 2.0.0.4
  • 3.9 BL
  • 4.6 BL
  • latest 2.0.1 firmware (first gen iPhone)
  • Once you have these files, watch my video and it should explain the rest! I fast forwarded some of the unnecessary parts during the restore, but everything is there. The video is just under 10 minutes, although the entire process took me over an hour.

Let me know how this works out for you. After updating to 2.0.1 my first gen feels like it has “come back from the dead”…it’s alive again! Also, updating to 2.0.1 has opened my eyes again to how much we are missing out by not jailbreaking our iPhone 3G’s. Soo…expect a iPhone 3G jailbreak video coming soon in the near future!

    Side notes:
    - This should work for people on firmware 1.1.1/1.1.2/1.1.3
    - Prior to jailbreaking I synced my first gen in iTunes–everything was backed up.
    - After the update, I synced the phone and restored from the back up. Everything was back to normal. Contacts, settings, bookmarks, etc.

Big thanks to iClarified and the WinPwn team for their hard work on this!

Does this way of upgrading also work in the EU? since I bought my IPhone in the UK, so i’m not using an AT&T or any other type of US simcard and I’m not subscribed to any sort of Internet provider (I just use wireless internet hotspots). Will this work if I just don’t check the Youtube fix box? Another question I have is if it’s possible to use WinPwn 2.0.0.4 with Itunes 8 or should I find a way to downgrade it to 7.7.1?
      Cheers

Hey everyone, the following should work for updating first gen iPhones to 2.2 firmware. Just click “update” via iTunes and once there, unlock and jailbreak using QuickPwn. Since the basebands haven’t changed in 2.2 for first gens, this method should work fine. I’ll be posting a video of it later. Good luck!

      Hi Ron,

It’s been awhile but did you ever resolve your problem. I seem to be having the same issues that you had. How did you fix it?
      Thanks

You can have any SIM inside. At this point in time, what you need to do is update to 2.2 in iTunes, then jailbreak/unlock using QuickPwn 2.2. It’s so easy now! Check out my video on jailbreaking 2.2.

Hi guys, I need help with my iPhone 3G, which I got from an uncle who bought it online from China. I put an ATT sim from my regular phone into the iphone and it makes and receive call fine, but it will not connect with itune. My computer recognized it only as a removable drive, also there is no WiFi connection, when I checked network there is no option for WiFi. Another thing there are no itune or Safari icon on the phone screen. What should I do.

I followed this tutorial which worked great, but I have an odd issue.

After upgrading from 1.1.4 to 2.0.1, I restored my contacts etc. through iTunes with the backup I made before starting. I think some junk from third party apps I had installed previously were carried over. For example, I had an app that let me change the carrier name, and after the firmware upgrade that custom carrier name is still there even though the icon for that app is nowhere to be seen. I’m assuming if all the old apps were wiped completely it should say ROGERS.

Every 5 or 6 days, my phone just shuts down and will not respond to anything. After a couple of days when the battery dies, I can plug it into the computer and it will recharge and go back to normal. It’s as if there is some conflict that occurs that completely locks up the phone.

My question is should I try and look through the file system and manually remove any old app left-overs I can find, or can I restore the phone again?

Is it a first gen iPhone? I would restore via iTunes to start from a clean slate.

I would update to 2.2 via iTunes, then jailbreak and unlock again. Do a clean restore and use QuickPwn 2.2 for Windows to jailbreak/unlock instead of WinPwn.

Can you expand on this a bit, what do you mean by a clean restore?

I used QuickPwn after updating my 1G from 1.1.2 to 2.2.1 everything works…except the SIM card…what now? I’m on Rogers in Canada…I knew it couldn’t be that easy.

Crap I updated my original 1.1.2v phone to 2.2.1 and followed the QuickPwn instructions…didn’t ask for the BL-39 or -46 or to check on Cydia…everything except the phone works…restored all my prior settings loaded the apps i had stored in iTunes (they work)…but no SIM recognition…no phone

I knew it would never work…crap now what?
