KnottyCase – Sustainable Canadian Made Wooden iPhone Case [Review]

A while back I had the honour of interviewing one of the co-founders of Knottycase. It’s a Canadian company that hand makes wooden cases for the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S. I’ve been using the case for a few weeks now, and I’m very impressed.

The Knottycase is a slider made of wood and polymer. The wood covers the back and the front. You can choose between the California Black Oak or Northern California Walnut. All the wood used is salvaged from Northern California. The KnottyCase team is in the process of making an all Canadian case using Canadian wood.

When you slide the case onto your phone, you’ll notice it’s a very snug fit. You won’t have to worry about it sliding off in your pocket, bag, purse or where ever you carry your phone. But this can cause issues if you’re someone who likes to use a screen shield. It’s such a precise fit, screen shields will peel up when you try to put on the case.

However, I have found using the ZAGG invisibleSHIELDs cut for use with cases do work. They are cut closer to the screen which allows the KnottyCase to slide on without peeling it up.

The cutouts along the sides and bottom give you ample room for dock connectors, and access to your buttons and such. In fact, because it’s slightly recessed in on the one side, flipping the mute switch and pushing the volume buttons is a lot easier than other cases.

Have a look at my video review of the KnottyCase.

As I mentioned in the video, what really makes this case stand out to me, and sets it apart from other wooden cases is the fact it’s made right here in Canada, and the cases are made from reclaimed salvage wood. So not only is the case functional, it’s also very stylish and a green product. And if you’ve seen other green products, you know not all of them are very appealing visually.

It’s also nice to know, with the salvaged wood, each case is going to have its own unique look and characteristics – making each KnottyCase a one of a kind.

Don’t worry iPhone 5 owners, a KnottyCase for you is in the works. You can sign up on the KnottyCase website to be notified when it’s available.

For me, this is one of the nicest cases I’ve used, and I can’t wait until there’s one for the iPhone 5. If you know someone with an iPhone 4 or 4S, this would make a great holiday gift. I have no doubt they’d love it.

Let me know what you think in the comments.

I like that it’s Canadian, but for that price, Miniot creates a much more refined product made completely of wood without any synthetic materials. Can’t see myself spending $80 when there is another product with a greater design aesthetic for $100.
